MURAL A conversation I had about what it is that the machines are doing to affect their environment came to the idea of rather than an additive or constructive action maybe they could have the potential to be destructive, shaping their world in a different manner. This reminded me of Diller and Scofidio’s installation at the Whitney Museum of Art entitled Mural. Simply its a robotic drill...

To control the camera rig I have written a program in Processing that controls and simulates the movement of the camera. This iteration uses the mouse to control the XY position of the rig through the GUI and the Up/Down keys or the slider to control the Z axis position. Fundamentally the program draws the desired position (red), simulates the movement of rig(blue) and calculates the length of the...

Here are couple of videos from the AAC Kinect workshop I was helping Przemek and Ruairi with last week. Some really interesting stuff came from the students in the 4 days they were doing it. This one is an interactive music table, the position of the hand in the X and Z axis relates to the note, tempo and volume played.

Cultural Perceptions of Technology
The blog is starting to become a bit too much of a demo for the Kinect so I thought it would be worth trying to post some of the wider research interests that accompany the project. One thing I have always been interested in is how new technologies, and specifically in this context, robotics and AI are perceived by different cultures.  With this current project I am working on, as well as...

This week I’m assisting/participating in a Kinect workshop with this year’s MSc Adaptive Architecture and Computation students, alongside fellow ex-AAC student Przemek Jaworski. Przemek has been doing some really innovative things with the Kinect, mostly to do with the creation of interactive surfaces and live updating data. This video is a demonstration of the latest iteration of his...

NIGHT VISION FOOTAGE A video of the machine filmed using a night vision camera, displaying the infrared map projected by the Kinect. Its amazing how shooting in Night Vision makes everything quite a lot more sinister/ Chris Cunningham-esque.

KINECT SKELETON TRACKING I final managed to get skeleton detection and mapping information from the Kinect into processing using the Simple-Open NI library. This is where the Kinect really gets interesting.
